The Irmandiña will be making an Atlantic crossing from Galicia, Spain to America, using ancient navigational instruments and techniques. She is native to Galicia, with an open design, commonly known as "dorna". The open, traditional design, and ease of movement through water, is the inspiration for these local sailors to make their Atlantic sail.

This type of boat was first built in the 16th Century. The dorna's design has remained practically unchanged throughout the centuries.

Today in Galicia a dorna is used primarily for recreation.
